CLEAN SEA's approches
Clean Sea
A voluntary initiative to curb off plastic and non-degradable debris on seashore
Clean Sea is an initiative that started to keep beaches of
Visakhapatnam free from all kinds of non-biodegradable waste. we focus on
plastic waste that is being dumped in the ocean which reaches the seashore,
collects them and takes it to municipal treatment plants. We aim to engage
people of all ages in Visakhapatnam to participate in beach clean up activities
that we take up on a daily basis or mostly during weekends.
We have noticed that the root cause for the damage being caused to the
sea is the sewage waste that is left untreated before disposing into the ocean.
Also single-use plastic bottles, plastic carry bags, and styrofoam are creating
massive destruction on the shore.
CLEAN SEA's approches
Our idea is to take this issue of improper sewage management and
drainage system to the notice of government officials and discuss our action
plan to curb the non-degradable waste on the beach. Vizag is bounded by hill
ranges of eastern ghats and the majority of town population live on the hill
slopes.
There is a great need for proper sewage management when it comes to
hill areas.
All the debris on the roadsides polyethylene waste and other waste
material reach the sewers along with the runoff flowing downstream. We idealize
the Panama Canal Locks system could be a good idea for the sewage water
treatment in Visakhapatnam district.
The Panama Water system works based on the gravity flow technique for
ships and vessels. It consists of three sets of locks that enable ships to move
only in one direction. The same technology could also be implemented for waste
disposal management where the untreated solid wastewater is led to the first
chamber of canal locks where the nondegradable waste could be collected. The
valve then opens to the next chamber where the remaining leftover debris is
removed, the treated water is then led into third chamber gates which open into
the ocean. Also opening of the culverts has to be provided with different sized
mesh or filters to collect the waste which has to be manually removed time and
again.
The deadly nondegradable plastic debris which is already present in
oceans could be managed by ocean cleanup machinery. It works by creating a cost
line to collect the floating plastic that is being employed in cleaning the
great pacific garbage patch. Other machineries like trash skimmers are the best
technology to deploy in managing currently existing trash in water bodies.
Clean sea aims to bring awareness in people of Vizag about the need to
save our sea from the plastic menace. We are planning to share our ideas with
the municipal corporation officials and other Govt authorities. We are also
working to bring local social service bodies, volunteers and youth on a common
platform. We worked together to keep our beautiful seashore clean by picking up
the trash clinging on to the rocks and plastic debris on the seashore.
